The Cap San Diego is the largest civilian cargo ship in the world still seaworthy — and that detail is the point: she is not a hull fixed to a quay but a genuinely working vessel, going out several times a year on short voyages under her original engine. She was built in Hamburg in 1961 for the South America line, one of the last generation of conventional cargo ships before container shipping upended the entire industry and made this type obsolete within a few years. The city of Hamburg saved her from the scrapyard in 1986. The visit is largely self-guided, which is its strength: you descend into the vast engine room, enter crew and officer cabins with their furnishings, and climb to the bridge to stand behind the wheel. There are few barriers and no forced route. Part of the ship operates as a working hotel — you can spend the night in a cabin in the middle of Hamburg's harbour.
