Walk down from the hill to the Landungsbrucken piers and take public harbour ferry 62 — it runs on an ordinary transport ticket and crosses the full dock panorama out to Finkenwerder. That gives you the harbour from water level after seeing it from above, for the price of a bus fare rather than a sightseeing cruise.

Stintfang is a small hill directly above the Landungsbrucken piers, and it is the best free vantage point over Hamburg's harbour. The elevation is modest but entirely sufficient: you stand above the level of the quays and see the whole scene — the docks, the giant cranes, the container ships and the harbour ferries moving directly below you. The name is old and means smelt fishing, the area having been a fishing spot before it became part of the city's fortifications in the seventeenth century. The fortifications were later removed and the hill turned into a terraced park with benches. Its practical value is that it is free, always open, and sits directly above a major transport interchange — making it the easiest viewpoint in the city to reach. The best timing is before sunset, when the cranes light up and the harbour lights begin, and the view works in winter as well as summer because the port never stops. The public harbour ferries depart directly below it.
