The Überseebrücke is a floating pier in Hamburg's harbour built in 1928, and it was the berth for ocean-going passenger liners — many German emigrants left from here for North and South America in the great decades of emigration. Its name means literally the overseas bridge, an accurate description of its original function. Large passenger ships no longer dock here — they moved to the modern cruise terminals — so the pier has become a mooring for museum ships and small excursion boats. The most significant thing berthed here now is the museum ship Cap San Diego, and the pier itself is free to walk and gives a close, water-level view of harbour traffic: ferries, tugs and container ships passing in the channel. It is a natural extension of a walk along the nearby Landungsbrucken rather than a destination in itself.
