The Glass House was the first house built in the Jardim Morumbi neighbourhood, designed by the Italian-Brazilian architect Lina Bo Bardi and built in 1950 and 1951 as her first work in Brazil after she arrived with her husband, Pietro Maria Bardi, in 1946. The couple lived in it for more than forty years, until her death in 1992 and his in 1999. The front of the house rises on slender columns among the trees, with a fully glazed façade that makes the forest part of the living room and gave the house its name. Around it is a garden of about 7,000 square metres whose trees Lina mostly planted herself, until it became a small forest. The house was a meeting place for intellectuals and artists debating architecture and Brazilian culture, and its designer later created the MASP museum on Avenida Paulista. It was listed by the state in 1987 and is the seat of the Instituto Bardi, which keeps the couple's collections and runs exhibitions and visits. Visits are paid guided tours at set times, booked on the institute's website.
