Corumbá's Craftsman's House is a folk-craft centre in a historic building in the city centre, where more than thirty artisans show work made from fish leather, wood, clay, sarsaparilla, cattail, water plants, seeds and even old newspapers. The building's construction date is unknown, but it was first restored in 1893, served as the state prison from 1905 to 1970, then stood empty for five years before it was rehabilitated and reopened on 29 September 1975 as a social-welfare centre. When the state was divided it became known as the Casa do Artesão. It holds specialist workshops, among them one making the viola-de-cocho, the Pantanal's traditional string instrument, an association crafting pieces from local fish leather, a room for Terena Indigenous work in clay and cattail, and a gallery of the painter Jorapimo. It is a good place for a genuine Pantanal souvenir; check the hours.
