Independence Square, which many locals call the «Jardim da Independência», is the central square of Corumbá, the border city with Bolivia on the Paraguay River, and its old public garden of shade trees and paths. The garden's story begins in 1897, when a public subscription paid for a bandstand at the centre of the square; the city then took on the wider improvement project, and that first bandstand has since vanished. Each year the square hosts the official ceremony marking the «Retaking of Corumbá» in 1867 during the Paraguayan War, at the monument to Antônio Maria Coelho, who led it. The square makes a short shady stop between the Pantanal History Museum on the river and the Casa do Artesão, and a place to watch the city's daily rhythm. It is free and always open.
