The Pantanal History Museum, Muhpan, stands in Porto Geral, the old port district of the border city of Corumbá in Mato Grosso do Sul, on the Paraguay River. It records human settlement in the Pantanal, the world's largest tropical wetland, and the region's cultural, artistic and ecological diversity. The museum grew out of UNESCO's recognition of the Pantanal as a biosphere reserve in 2000: the Barbosa Rodrigues Foundation took on the project in 2002, work began in 2004 and it opened in 2008, with an exhibition design by the architect Nivaldo Vitorino. It occupies a three-storey warehouse built in 1876, refurbished in 2017. Entry is free according to travel guides. In September 2026 the city opened a tender to renovate the building, so hours may change during the works; check before visiting. It makes a good primer on the Pantanal before heading out on trips.
