**A row of coloured houses standing with their feet in the river — and their colours were chosen by two artists to a scheme in 1982** — on the bank of the Onyar. ⚠ **The houses are old and the colours are not**: **they were built over centuries directly on the river's edge** — ⚠ **with no quay between them and the water**; **and their fronts had been faded and worn**. ✅ **Then in 1982** the city commissioned the painter **Enric Ansesa** and the architect **Joan Bosch** to devise a colour plan — ⚠ **not at random but by study**: **shades of ochre, red, yellow and orange** ✅ **graded so that no two adjacent houses repeat**. ✅ **The result became the image of Girona** — **its most photographed thing**. ⚠ **And the best position is the iron Eiffel bridge** — **built by Gustave Eiffel in 1877**.

**It works perfectly — the fast train takes 38 minutes; but one night changes the experience.** ✅ **The day trip**: ⚠ **the AVE/Avant from Barcelona Sants to Girona takes **38 minutes**** — ✅ **genuinely fast**; **the regional train is cheaper but about 80 minutes**. ⚠ **And Girona station is a 15-minute walk from the old city.** ✅ **A day covers the essentials**: **the cathedral, the Jewish quarter, the walls, the Onyar houses and the baths** — ✅ **the old city is very small and entirely walkable**. ✅ **⚠ But a night changes it**: **day trips arrive around 11:00 and leave around 17:00** — ⚠ **so the lanes are crowded during exactly those hours**; ✅ **and early morning and evening they are empty and completely silent**, **which is the best of the place**. ✅ **⚠ And the walls (Passeig de la Muralla) are free** — **walked above the city**, ✅ **and missed by many**; **allow 45 minutes**. ✅ **And Girona is a good base for the Costa Brava** — **the coast is 40 minutes by car**, **with towns such as Cadaqués and Tossa de Mar**.
