**The widest Gothic nave in the world — twenty-two metres without a single column in the middle** — above ninety steps rising from the square. ⚠ **The number is the story**: **a single nave 22.98 metres wide, roofed in a stone vault**, ✅ **the widest Gothic vault ever built**; **and nothing holds it up from within**. ⚠ **It was a terrifying decision**: **the master Guillem Bofill proposed a single nave instead of three in 1416** — ⚠ **so the bishop summoned twelve architects to advise**; **and they split**. ✅ **The single nave was built**, **and has stood six centuries**. ✅ **The fabric is cumulative**: **a Gothic apse of 1312, an older Romanesque tower, and an 18th-century Baroque front**. ✅ **And its museum holds the Tapestry of Creation** — **an 11th-century embroidery**.

**By carrying the thrust outward and resisting it there — the problem is not weight but direction.** ⚠ **The problem**: **a stone vault does not only press down** — ✅ **it also pushes outward**; **and the wider the vault, the greater that lateral thrust**, ⚠ **which is what topples walls, not the weight itself**. ✅ **The usual Gothic answer**: **a tall central nave with lower aisles on either side** — ⚠ **the aisles buttress the nave**, **and flying buttresses carry the thrust from the nave's head to piers outside**. ✅ **What was done at Girona is different**: **the aisles were omitted** — ⚠ **so the whole thrust falls on two walls only**. ✅ **The solution**: **extremely thick walls** ⚠ **reinforced by a series of deep side chapels between buttresses** — **so each chapel is in truth a **hollow buttress**, doing an aisle's work without being one**. ✅ **And the vault itself is built light**: **load-bearing ribs with thin infill between them**. ⚠ **The risk was real**: **an error in the calculation and everything would have come down during construction**; ✅ **which is why twelve architects were consulted**, **and why they genuinely disagreed**. ⚠ **Nothing wider was built after it** — **the Renaissance brought another manner**.
