**Spain's greatest Gothic cathedral, built over Toledo's main mosque — with a hole cut in its roof to light a Baroque altarpiece** — in the heart of the old city. Building began in **1226** on the site of the **Friday mosque**, which itself stood on a Visigothic church — **three religious layers in one place**. ⚠ **Its famous feature is the *Transparente***: a Baroque work of 1732 — **a hole was opened in the Gothic vault behind the high altar so that sunlight falls** onto a marble sculpture of angels and cloud. **Theatrical lighting built into stone.** ✅ It holds a **treasury** with a monstrance of **three hundred kilograms of gold and silver**, and a **sacristy hung with El Greco, Goya, Titian and Raphael**. ⚠ **And in its Mozarabic chapel** Mass is still said in the old Visigothic rite.

**A name for Toledo pointing to the coexistence of Muslims, Christians and Jews — true in substance and overstated in detail.** ✅ **What is established**: **Toledo** was under Islamic rule from 711 until **1085**, when it fell to Castile. ⚠ **And it was not emptied afterwards**: **Muslims (Mudéjares), Jews and Christians remained** for centuries, **and the Arabised Christians (Mozarabs)** kept their rite and their Arabic. ✅ **The physical evidence is real**: **two mosques still standing** (Cristo de la Luz and the old mosque), **two churches built as synagogues** (El Tránsito and Santa María la Blanca) **with Islamic-style arches**, **and Mudéjar architecture everywhere**. ✅ **And the «school of translators»**: in the 12th and 13th centuries **Arabic and Greek texts were translated here into Latin** — Aristotle, Ibn Sina, Ibn Rushd, al-Khwarizmi — ⚠ **and that is the road by which this learning entered Europe**. ⚠ **The necessary qualification**: **it was not equal coexistence**: there were **discriminatory taxes, restrictions and massacres** (the Jewish massacre of 1391), **and it ended in the expulsion of the Jews in 1492 and of the Muslims later**. ✅ **So the accurate word**: **a long, productive and strained proximity**, not a paradise.
