**A museum to the painter who made Toledo his subject, in a 16th-century house with a garden** — beside the El Tránsito synagogue. ⚠ **It is not El Greco's house**: **the museum was created in the early 20th century** by a collector who wanted to recreate a house of the painter's time — **so it is a reimagining rather than an original home**; **El Greco lived nearby but not here**. ✅ **Its collection**: the ***View and Plan of Toledo*** — ⚠ **among his strangest works**: a view of the city with a map drawn inside the painting, held up by a youth; **the *Apostolado***, a series of Christ and the apostles; **and works by his contemporaries**. ✅ **The house itself is handsome**: **a courtyard, a garden and a 14th-century cellar** that formed part of Samuel Halevi's palace. ⚠ **El Greco was Greek**, from Crete — hence the nickname.

**Elongated figures, cold colour and light with no source — a Byzantine, Venetian and Spanish mixture resembling nobody.** ✅ **The background**: **Doménikos Theotokópoulos** was born in **Crete** in 1541, then under Venetian rule, ⚠ **and trained first as a painter of Byzantine icons** — **which is the key**: **an icon does not imitate reality but presents a spiritual presence**, **in flat forms on gold grounds with unnatural proportions**. ✅ **Then he went to Venice and Rome** — **learning colour from Titian and Tintoretto**, **and the body from Michelangelo**. ⚠ **But he did not succeed in Italy** and moved to Spain in 1577, **settling in Toledo** until his death in 1614. ✅ **What resulted**: **bodies exaggeratedly elongated** — sometimes at impossible proportions; **cold, sharp colour** (blue, grey, lemon yellow); ⚠ **and light with no source**, emanating from within the figures themselves; **and storm-laden skies**. **The aim is spiritual rather than realistic** — exactly as in an icon. ⚠ **His contemporaries rejected him for it** and he was forgotten for centuries; ✅ **then the 20th century rediscovered him** and saw a forerunner of Expressionism — **with Cézanne and Picasso among his admirers**.
