The President Itamar Franco Culture Centre is a cultural and institutional complex in Belo Horizonte's Barro Preto district. It houses the Sala Minas Gerais concert hall and the home of the Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra, the Mineiraria food space in a listed building, and the headquarters of Rede Minas television and Rádio Inconfidência. Work began in 2011 and it opened in 2015, answering the needs of the orchestra, founded in 2008, which had played mostly at the shared Palácio das Artes and missed about half the concerts it could have given. It was designed by the local architects Jô Vasconcellos and Rafael Yanni, with the hall's interior by the acoustics expert José Augusto Nepomuceno. The project's first focus is sound: the hall rests on natural ground with no basement to avoid interference, and its «shoebox» shape follows world reference halls for classical music acoustics.
