The Abílio Barreto History Museum is Belo Horizonte's city museum, run by the municipal culture foundation, with short and long-term exhibitions and cultural and educational events. It occupies an old farmhouse that survived the building of Minas Gerais's new capital in the late 19th century. The house was built in 1883, fourteen years before the capital opened, as the seat of the Leitão farm in the village of Curral del-Rei, which the city replaced, and it is one of that village's few physical remains. The farm was vacated in 1894 when residents were expropriated for the capital, and the house survived intact because its district was only urbanised in the 1940s; it had many uses, among them an agricultural station in the 1890s. The museum opened on 1 February 1943 under the mayor Juscelino Kubitschek, and the historian and journalist Abílio Barreto conceived it and was its first director. Entry is usually free; check the hours.
