The historic centre of João Pessoa spreads over the Centro, Varadouro, Jaguaribe and Tambiá districts of the capital of Paraíba and was recognised as national heritage in December 2007. João Pessoa is Brazil's third-oldest capital, founded in 1585 on the banks of the Sanhauá river, and has borne several names, including Filipeia, after King Philip, who then held the thrones of both Spain and Portugal, and Frederikstad under Dutch rule. Its present name was adopted in 1930 in honour of the politician João Pessoa, the state governor assassinated that year. The listing covers 37 hectares and about 700 buildings, along with historic streets, squares and parks, and is considered Paraíba's most important architectural ensemble and one of Brazil's largest historic sites. Styles from different periods sit side by side: baroque and rococo in its 17th-century religious buildings, colonial and eclectic houses, and Art Nouveau and Art Deco around Praça Antenor Navarro and the old Hotel Globo. It makes a half-day walk.
