Laguna's historic centre is one of the finest in southern Brazil, with hundreds of its buildings protected by the national heritage institute, in the town founded in the 17th century by the explorer Domingos de Brito Peixoto as a gateway for settling the country's south. Its narrow cobbled streets are lined with colonial and eclectic houses with coloured façades and iron balconies, on the shore of the lagoon. The centre is tied to great events: here the «Juliana Republic» was proclaimed in 1839 during the Ragamuffin revolt, and from here came Anita Garibaldi, the town's daughter who became the «Heroine of Two Worlds». It holds the Anita Garibaldi Museum in the old town hall, Anita's house, quiet squares and cafés. Nearby, at the «Molhes da Barra» where the lagoon meets the sea, you can see something unique in the world: dolphins that work with fishermen, driving shoals of fish towards them and signalling with their heads when to cast their nets. The centre suits half a day on foot, best in the morning.
