The Anita Garibaldi Historical Museum in Laguna, in southern Santa Catarina, holds a collection on the Ragamuffin War and the «Juliana Republic», along with objects telling the lives of the town's early residents. It is named after Anita Garibaldi, Laguna-born wife of the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi, called the «Heroine of Two Worlds» for fighting in both Brazil and Italy. The museum occupies one of the oldest buildings in southern Brazil, the town hall and jail begun in 1735, with the council upstairs and the town guard on the ground floor. In this building on 24 July 1839 the «Juliana Republic» was proclaimed, the free and independent republic that briefly made Laguna its capital during the Ragamuffin revolt. It became a museum on 31 July 1949, the centenary of Anita's death. The building is listed by the national heritage institute and makes the starting point for a walk around the historic centre with Anita's house nearby. Check opening times and admission.
