Chiang Mai's best-known market, spreading every night along Chang Khlan Road east of the old city, with hundreds of stalls on the pavements and in branching arcades. It is the easiest place to buy northern Thai crafts: textiles and colourful clothing, painted paper umbrellas, woodcarving, silverware, soaps and souvenirs. Besides shopping there are big food courts, and a nearby area known for its Muslim community and halal restaurants around the historic Ban Ho Mosque a few steps away. Halal restaurants here serve the famous northern dish khao soi, curry noodle soup. Wandering is free, and the market opens every evening from about six until near midnight. Bargaining is expected at most stalls, so start at about half the asking price and settle politely. It is crowded at weekends and in high season, so mind your bag. Combine it with dinner at a nearby halal restaurant, or prayer at Ban Ho Mosque.
