An art museum in the building that was the China Pavilion of Expo 2010 Shanghai, known as the «Crown of the East». It was built between December 2007 and February 2010 as a red inverted pyramid inspired by the timber brackets of traditional Chinese architecture, and it has become the symbol of the Expo area. The Shanghai Art Museum, founded in 1956, moved in and reopened under its new name on 1 October 2012. It holds more than 14,000 works of modern and contemporary Chinese art in 27 galleries over 64,000 m². The permanent exhibitions are free and special shows cost about CNY 20, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm, last entry 5 pm, closed on Mondays, per visitor guides. China Art Museum metro station is at its door.
