A contemporary art museum on the Huangpu riverside, in the building of the Nanshi power plant, which opened in 1897 and moved to this site in 1935. It served as the Pavilion of the Future at Expo 2010 and, after nine months of conversion, opened as a museum on 1 October 2012. China's first state-run museum of contemporary art, it has 41,000 square metres of floor space, 15,000 of them for exhibitions, and has hosted the Shanghai Biennale since it opened, alongside design shows and projects by emerging curators; its tall chimney is a riverside landmark. Entry is free, though some exhibitions are ticketed; it is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 7 pm, closed on Mondays, per visitor guides.
