One of Chongqing's best-known buildings, a huge hall for meetings and major events built from 1951 to 1954 in the style of traditional Chinese palaces, with a round green dome recalling Beijing's Temple of Heaven and long wings with red roofs and columns. The building rises 65 m and covers about 66,000 square metres in all; the round main hall is topped by a 55 m dome more than 46 m across inside, ringed by five tiers of seats for about 4,200 people. The hall faces the wide People's Square, with the Three Gorges Museum across it; locals gather in the square in the evening to dance and exercise, and the hall is floodlit in gold at night. Entry is about CNY 8, 08:00–18:00, per visitor guides, and it may close during meetings and shows. Viewing it from the square is free, and it pairs easily with the Three Gorges Museum.
