One of China's largest museums, opened in 2005 opposite Chongqing's Great Hall of the People, telling the history and nature of the city and the Three Gorges region of the Yangtze, in a building with sloping walls topped by a large glass dome. The museum covers about 42,000 square metres, and its four main galleries cover the ancient Ba kingdom of the region, Chongqing through the ages and the Three Gorges before the great dam, alongside bronze sculptures and huge reliefs. Visitors find models of the villages and temples flooded by the dam's waters, paintings, ceramics and objects from many eras, making it an ideal introduction to the city before a river trip through the gorges. Entry is free on showing your passport, with no advance booking since October 2025, 09:00–17:00, closed Mondays, per visitor guides.
