The Church of St. John at Kaneo stands alone on a rocky point above the lake at the western end of Ohrid's old town, and the view of its red-tiled dome against the water is the picture most visitors take home from Ohrid. Below it lie the small Kaneo beach and the fishing quarter of the same name. The date of its building is not known, but records of church property show it existed before 1447, and archaeologists believe it dates from the 13th century. It has a cross-shaped plan on a rectangular base and was partly rebuilt in the 14th century. Restoration in 1964 uncovered frescoes in its dome, including Christ Pantocrator, and a wall painting shows Saint Clement of Ohrid, whose monastery at Plaošnik is close by. It is a place of worship: dress modestly, keep your voice down, and expect photography inside to be forbidden. There is a small entry fee. The finest views are from the cliff path that leads to it from the old town and from the water on a boat trip, especially at sunset.
