Plaošnik is an archaeological site and holy place on the slope about 250 metres south of Samuel's Fortress, with the lake below. At its heart is the Church of Saints Clement and Panteleimon: Saint Clement of Ohrid built a church here in 893 on the foundations of an earlier Christian basilica, and around it he founded one of the first schools of Slavic letters. In the Ottoman period the church was converted into a mosque, known as the Imaret Mosque. The mosque was taken down in 2000, and the church was rebuilt on its old foundations in the years that followed. Around it lie the excavated remains of early Christian basilicas with mosaic floors, and in 2007 archaeologists found a hoard of about 2,383 Venetian coins here, evidence of trade between Ohrid and Venice. There is a small fee for the church, which is a place of worship where modest dress is expected. The site is open ground around it, and from here it is an easy walk up to the fortress or down through the old town.
