The Cinemateca Brasileira is the institution responsible for preserving and promoting Brazil's audiovisual production, based in São Paulo. Since 1940 it has restored and shared its collection, keeping about 250,000 reels of film and more than a million cinema-related documents, from photographs and scripts to books, magazines and posters, making it the largest «moving image» archive in South America. It was formally founded in 1949 as the film library of São Paulo's Museum of Modern Art and became the Cinemateca Brasileira in 1956 under its founder and chief curator Paulo Emilio Sales Gomes, and it is a founding member of the International Federation of Film Archives. Its main home is in Vila Mariana, in a listed 1887 building that served as the old municipal slaughterhouse until 1927 and was handed to the institution in 1988. It has screening rooms and an open courtyard, a treat for film lovers; check the screening programme.
