The Correr fills the Napoleonic wing overlooking St Mark's Square, and it is the museum of Venice itself: how the Republic was governed, how it traded and fought at sea, and how its people lived — maps, flags, coinage, ship models and the working objects of a state that ruled the eastern Mediterranean for a thousand years. It also holds the apartments Empress Sisi occupied during her Venetian stays, in royal splendour over the square, and a picture gallery whose best piece is Carpaccio's "Two Venetian Ladies". Its great practical virtue: one ticket with the Doge's Palace, and an entrance with almost no queue — the quiet face of the same ticket people stand in line for at the palace.
