The Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve is a wide natural area of about 350 hectares on the bank of the Río de la Plata, right behind the towers of Puerto Madero. In the early 20th century the area was a popular riverside resort where city people bathed; it later became low land that ponds, reeds and trees gradually covered, and it was made a nature reserve. Long walking and cycling paths run through it between ponds, marshes and small woods, ending at the broad brown riverbank. It is one of the city's best places for birdwatching, home to hundreds of species, along with turtles and lizards, and from inside it the Puerto Madero skyline rises oddly above the reeds. Entry is free. It is close to the centre and suits a quiet half day; bring water and sunscreen, as some paths have little shade.
