The frigate Presidente Sarmiento is a historic sailing ship moored in Dock 3 of Puerto Madero. Built in England, it entered service in 1897 as Argentina's first modern training ship designed for the purpose. It made thirty-nine voyages around the world, covering some 1,100,000 nautical miles, served until 1961 and became a museum in 1964. On board, visitors walk the deck among masts, rigging and the wooden steering wheel, and see at the bow a carved figurehead representing the Argentine Republic. Below are the crew's mess, the officers' cabins, the engine rooms and displays from its voyages: photographs, charts, navigation instruments and gifts gathered in ports around the world. The visit takes about forty minutes for a small cash fee, Thursday to Sunday, and is suspended in heavy rain.
