The country that designed its life: the Design Museum in the Design District south of the centre has told since 1873 how "Finnish design" became a world brand โ Alvar Aalto's bent chair and wave vase, Marimekko's flowered cloth, Iittala glass, orange Fiskars scissors, the Nokia 3310, all in rooms explaining why every Finnish home looks as if it came from a catalogue. The permanent show on the ground floor is the history of Finnish design in its objects; the upper floors hold temporary exhibitions of contemporary designers and fashion collections. The tone is local and clever, and the shop is among the best places to buy genuinely Finnish gifts. It neighbours the Museum of Architecture in the heart of the Design District with its small shops, suiting a rainy afternoon of museum and browsing.
