An association formed in 1907 of architects, designers and industrialists, aiming to raise the quality of German products by joining art to industry โ a response to German goods being dismissed as cheap and badly designed. It founded the museum as a teaching instrument: showing good examples for manufacturers to learn from. The Werkbund was the direct root from which the Bauhaus later grew.

Die Neue Sammlung is the oldest design museum in the world: founded in 1907, when industrial design was not considered a museum subject at all, on the initiative of the Deutscher Werkbund, which wanted to raise the quality of German industrial products by teaching through example. The collection today exceeds a hundred thousand objects covering industrial, graphic and craft design from the nineteenth century to the present: furniture, household goods, appliances, posters and fashion. The best known is the car hall in the basement โ vehicles selected as works of design rather than as transport, shown on a white floor under gallery lighting. The museum occupies a wing within the Pinakothek der Moderne, so its ticket may be shared with the modern art, architecture and graphics sections โ which makes it among the best museum value in Munich. A recently added digital section shows the design of interfaces and computing hardware across the decades.
