The Dresden City Museum tells the city's history from its beginnings to today, and differs from Dresden's art and treasure museums in that it is about people rather than rulers. Its strongest material covers the twentieth century: life before the war, the bombing of February 1945 and what followed, then forty years under East German rule, and the peaceful demonstrations of 1989 that brought the system down. The museum is frank about these periods and does not avoid the difficult questions.
