The Drum Tower of Xi'an, built in 1380 in the early Ming, a massive timber tower on a brick base at the entrance to the Muslim Quarter, facing the Bell Tower across a broad square; for centuries the two kept the city's time, the bell at dawn and the drum at dusk. On its outer terraces stand 24 drums named after the 24 solar terms of the traditional Chinese calendar, inside is a great drum made in 1996, short drum performances take place several times a day, and its balcony looks out over the rooftops of the Muslim Quarter. Tickets are CNY 30, or CNY 50 with the Bell Tower, and it is open from 8.30 am to 9.30 pm from April to October and to 6 pm in winter, per visitor guides.
