A Taoist temple on West Street in the heart of old Xi'an, the largest City God temple in Shaanxi and north-west China. It was first built in 1387 under the Ming on another site near the east gate, then moved to its present spot in 1433. Most of its buildings burned in 1723 and were rebuilt with timber from an old Ming palace, and its main hall is the only building in Shaanxi with a «wudian» hipped roof sloping on all four sides, the highest grade of traditional Chinese roof; it became a national protected monument in 2001, and visitors are asked to keep quiet and respect the site. Entry is free from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm, per visitor guides; a long lane of shops leads in, and the Muslim Quarter, with its markets and halal restaurants, is a short walk away.
