El Zanjón de Granados is an old house in San Telmo, carefully restored, hiding beneath it a labyrinth of wide, vaulted brick tunnels along the bed of an old stream that once crossed the site. Layer by layer, the house reveals the foundations of Buenos Aires' oldest quarter and the remains of the city's earliest homes. On the guided tour visitors go down into the tunnels and walk among walls and vaults, see traces of everyday life found during the restoration, and hear the story of the neighbourhood from its first settlers to its time of grand family houses and then immigrant tenements. Nearby is the Casa Mínima, a very narrow house some two hundred years old with clay walls, visited on a separate tour. Visits are by guided tour only, about an hour, at set times every day; booking ahead is best.
