Central do Brasil is one of Brazil's most famous railway stations, in central Rio de Janeiro on Avenida Presidente Vargas, opposite the Campo de Santana park. It is the terminus of the city's suburban rail network and a connection point for the metro and buses. The first station opened in 1858 as the terminus of the Dom Pedro II Railway, which linked the then capital with São Paulo and Minas Gerais, in the presence of the emperor. The old building was demolished in the 1940s and the present Art Deco station opened in 1943; the Hungarian-Brazilian architect Geza Heller added a towering block with four clocks on its faces that became a city landmark. It takes its name from the old railway company, and the name became official after the 1998 film «Central do Brasil», shot partly here, which earned Fernanda Montenegro an Oscar nomination. It makes a short stop to photograph the clock tower.
