The FAMA Museum, the «Marcos Amaro Art Factory», is one of the largest private museums open to the public in Latin America, in a central part of Itu, São Paulo state, housing the collection of the artist and collector Marcos Amaro. It opened in 2018 to spread contemporary art with a focus on three-dimensional work, and as a statement that art should not be confined to the big capitals. The museum occupies 25,000 square metres of buildings in the old São Pedro factory, a major textile mill of the early 20th century of great historic and cultural value to the region, with broad halls and large windows. Its collection of some 2,000 works was assembled over a single decade, beginning with a painting by Cândido Portinari and including work by leading contemporary Brazilian artists. Sculptures and large-scale works fill the halls and outdoor courtyards, making half a day of art. Check opening times and admission, and pair it with the Republican Museum in the same town.
