The Itu Convention Republican Museum is devoted to Brazil's «Old Republic» period, housed in a two-storey townhouse in Itu, São Paulo state, where supporters of overthrowing the monarchy met in 1873 in a gathering known as the «Itu Convention», a milestone of the republican movement that triumphed in 1889. The museum opened on 18 April 1923 and has since been an annex of the University of São Paulo's Paulista Museum. It presents the Brazilian republican movement and the first phase of the republic from São Paulo's perspective, alongside the history of Itu and its region in the 19th century, with furniture, paintings, documents and objects of the period, and it carries out research and teaching on historic heritage. The museum closed in 2020 for fire-safety works and reopened in May 2023. Entry is usually free; check times, and pair it with a walk around Itu's historic centre, about 40 minutes from Sorocaba.
