The chief gate in the Venetian walls that ring the old town of Nicosia, known in its day as the «Porta Giuliana». The Venetians built it in 1567 as part of the new city walls, modelled on a famous gate in Crete. It is a vaulted passage cut through the broad earthen rampart, crowned in the middle by a spherical dome eleven metres across, with a round opening at the top that lets in light in the manner of the Pantheon in Rome. The walls themselves form a full circle of pointed bastions, built by the Venetians between 1567 and 1570, and still surround the old town; their moats have become gardens and open squares. In 1980 Nicosia municipality decided to restore the gate as a cultural centre for exhibitions and concerts, and the passage is free to enter when it is open. From here you can walk along the walls towards the heart of the old town.
