A traditional pedestrian quarter inside the walls of old Nicosia, near Eleftheria Square; its name means «the people's neighbourhood». Its houses were restored as a showcase of traditional Cypriot town architecture. The buildings date from the late eighteenth century, made of wood, sandstone and mudbrick, with wooden balconies, stone arches and painted doors on narrow, winding, stone-paved lanes. The lanes mix homes with craft and souvenir shops, including traditional Cypriot embroidery, and cafés and tavernas in small squares. Nicosia's main tourist information centre is here, and free walking tours of the old town start from it on set days of the week. Ledra Street and the Venetian walls are an easy walk away.
