The Selimiye Mosque, once the Cathedral of Saint Sophia, is a mosque in the northern part of old Nicosia and historically the main mosque on the island of Cyprus. It occupies the largest and oldest surviving Gothic church in Cyprus. Its interior is 66 metres long and 21 metres wide, holding some 2,500 worshippers. It is the largest surviving historic building in Nicosia and was the coronation church of the kings of Cyprus. It may have been the largest church built in the Eastern Mediterranean between the rise of Islam and the late Ottoman period. It became a mosque after the Ottoman conquest. You see a tall sand-coloured Gothic stone front with pointed doorways and a large carved window, and two tall slender minarets rising over the towers. The lanes and cafés of the old city surround it under the trees, and the minarets show above the roofs from afar. It is about 400 metres from the centre of old Nicosia in a straight line. It is a working place of worship, so respect prayer times and dress modestly. Visitors from the south cross at the checkpoints with a passport, and the Republic of Cyprus treats entry through the north's airport as illegal entry.
