The Public Market is a historic building of two wings separated by an open central passage, in the heart of downtown Florianópolis, and the meeting place of locals and visitors for more than a century. The market moved to its present site on 5 February 1899, then on the seafront with a single wing; the second wing was added in 1931 on reclaimed land. Today it stands back from the sea after large areas of the South Bay were filled in. Inside are fishmongers who open at dawn, stalls of spices, crafts and clothes, and restaurants and cafés in the central passage. It has survived two fires, the latest in 2005, when the whole north wing burned and was later restored. Morning is the best time to see the fish market in full swing. Many of the restaurants in the central passage are bars serving beer and cachaça, so ask for places that only serve food if you prefer.
