The Victor Meirelles Museum is devoted to the memory and work of Victor Meirelles de Lima, one of the most important Romantic painters in nineteenth-century Brazil. It occupies the house in central Florianópolis where the artist was born and belongs to the Brazilian Institute of Museums. In the 1940s the house was threatened with demolition to widen the street; the federal government bought it, it was listed as national heritage in 1950, and the museum opened on 15 November 1952. The house is a small two-storey eighteenth-century Luso-Brazilian townhouse, with a shop on the ground floor and living quarters above, one of the few of its kind left in the city. The collection began with twenty-one paintings and drawings donated by the National Museum of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro, including studies for his famous «Battle of Guararapes», and has grown through later gifts. The museum is close to Praça XV de Novembro, so it fits easily into a walk around the city centre.
