Here Francis Light of the British East India Company landed in 1786 to found the first British settlement in Southeast Asia, and here the fort was built that became the seed of George Town. It began as a timber stockade and was rebuilt in brick in the early nineteenth century as a star-shaped fort; today it is the largest standing fort in Malaysia. Do not expect a towering castle: the walls are low, and inside are a broad square, an old powder magazine, a small garrison chapel and bronze cannon on the ramparts, the best known being the Seri Rambai gun, wrapped in local legend. In recent years the old moat has been excavated and restored to its original line, with panels explaining the site's history. Foreign adults pay RM 20 and children RM 10. Published opening hours vary between sources, so check before you go. It is exposed to the sun, so early morning or just before sunset is kinder. It sits on the waterfront beside the Queen Victoria clock tower and the Esplanade, a natural starting point for a walk through the old town.
