A solitary rock hill on the west bank of the Li River in central Guilin, half on land and half in the water, rising about 63 m above the ground; it seems to hold back the river's waves in the flood season, hence its name, «Wave-Subduing Hill». The name also recalls Ma Yuan, a general of the Han dynasty known as the «Wave-Subduing General», who was honoured with a shrine on the hill under the Tang; a bronze statue of him on horseback stands at its foot. At the foot of the hill, on the river's edge, is the Returned Pearl Cave, wrapped in folk legends and old rock inscriptions, and a stone stairway climbs to the summit for a wide view over the Li River, the city's hills and nearby Diecai Hill. Tickets are about CNY 30, or about 45 combined with Diecai Hill, per visitor guides. The climb is short but steep, so take your time; mornings or just before sunset are best.
