The Fullerton Hotel is a luxury hotel near the mouth of the Singapore River in the city centre, a few hundred metres from Raffles Place. It was originally known as the Fullerton Building and also as the General Post Office Building. The building is named after Robert Fullerton, first Governor of the Straits Settlements from 1826 to 1829. It was commissioned in 1924 for the colony's centenary celebrations and designed by Major P. H. Keys of Keys & Dowdeswell, a Shanghai firm that won an architectural competition. Its northern end covers the site of the old Fort Fullerton, and it was designated a national monument of Singapore in 2015. The pale stone facade with massive Doric columns runs along the riverbank under red roofs, mirrored in the water where small river boats pass. In the evening it is lit in warm gold, with the financial district's towers rising behind. Visitors admire the facade from the riverbank or Anderson Bridge and walk the waterfront to Marina Bay. Visitors can step into the hotel lobby.
