Fundación Proa is a private art centre founded in 1996 in La Boca, steps from colourful Caminito and the Vuelta de Rocha harbour on the Riachuelo river. It fills an old house with an Italianate facade, renewed in 2008 to designs by the Milan studio Caruso-Torricella, which added two glass fronts on either side that open the interior to the neighbourhood. The foundation focuses on the great art movements of the twentieth century and contemporary art, bringing major international exhibitions, alongside education programmes, talks and screenings. The building has four exhibition halls, a multimedia room, an art bookshop and a terrace café overlooking the harbour. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, with free entry on Wednesdays and guided tours every day.
