The Accademia is the treasury of Venetian painting: the world's greatest collection of the school of colour that changed European art — Bellini, Giorgione, Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Tiepolo — housed in a former convent and scuola beside the Grand Canal at the Accademia bridge. Here is Giorgione's "Tempest", the small enigma that has defeated five centuries of interpretation; Carpaccio's vast narrative cycles telling legends in purely Venetian detail; and Leonardo's Vitruvian Man — the most famous drawing on earth — shown only for short spells because light harms it. The museum is large without exhausting: two hours cover it, and its position opens the ideal Dorsoduro walk towards the Guggenheim and the Salute.
