The Groeninge Museum is Bruges' fine-arts museum and the home of the "Flemish Primitives" — the painters who made fifteenth-century Bruges Europe's capital of oil painting when it was its richest city: Jan van Eyck with his masterpiece "Madonna with Canon van der Paele" (1436), astonishing in its precision of fabric, glass and faces, Hans Memling, Hugo van der Goes, and Gerard David with his terrifying "Judgement of Cambyses" (a corrupt judge flayed alive — hung in the courtroom as a warning). The collection continues beyond: Hieronymus Bosch, the Flemish Renaissance, Belgian Symbolism (Khnopff), and modernism (Magritte, Delvaux, Broodthaers) — six centuries of Belgian art in a museum small in size, great in value, visited in ninety minutes. On the Dijver near the Rozenhoedkaai and the Church of Our Lady — Bruges' foremost museum, and the ticket includes the adjoining Arentshuis (Frank Brangwyn).
