The Topography of Terror adjoins it directly: a free indoor and outdoor exhibition on the ground of the Gestapo and Nazi security headquarters, alongside the longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall on the same street. Together they make the densest historical half-day in Berlin, and one of them is free.

The Gropius Bau is a major exhibition hall in an 1881 building by Martin Gropius โ uncle of the famous Walter Gropius who founded the Bauhaus. It was designed as a museum of applied arts in an Italian Renaissance manner, with an inner courtyard under a glass roof, mosaics, and terracotta ornament across the facade representing the crafts and arts. Its location carries historical weight: it stands directly beside the ground once occupied by Gestapo headquarters, and metres from the line of the Berlin Wall โ for decades the building sat against the wall in a near-abandoned zone with its eastern windows bricked up. It was severely damaged in the war and remained a ruin into the 1970s. Today it holds no permanent collection at all: it is a hall for major temporary exhibitions only, several a year covering contemporary art, photography, non-European art and large historical shows. The inner courtyard alone justifies going in โ one of the finest interior spaces in Berlin.
