In Lohsepark, the long green park at the centre of the new quarter between the residential blocks. The memorial platform runs along its northern end, and it is entirely possible to walk past without registering it as a memorial โ it is deliberately integrated into the park rather than fenced off. Look for the long metal panels set into the ground.

The deportation trains left Hamburg from this station. The Hannoverscher Bahnhof was a passenger station that became a freight yard, and from it more than eight thousand Jews and Roma from Hamburg and northern Germany were deported to ghettos and camps between 1940 and 1945. The station itself no longer exists โ destroyed in the war and later cleared, with the modern HafenCity district and its new residential towers built on its ground. That contradiction is what makes the site difficult: Hamburg's newest and most expensive quarter stands on one of its heaviest pieces of land. The memorial in Lohsepark preserves what remains: the original platform along its full length, set with panels carrying the dates of the trains, their destinations, and the number deported on each. A documentation centre opened later shows names and biographies. The site is free and always open, in a public park residents cross daily.
