The Helix Bridge, officially The Helix, is a pedestrian bridge linking Marina Centre with Marina South in Singapore's Marina Bay area, about 1 km from Raffles Place in a straight line. It officially opened on 24 April 2010 and fully opened on 18 July that year. An international team of architects and engineers designed it on the double-helix form of DNA, but twisting to the left, the opposite of natural DNA. Canopies of glass and steel mesh shade pedestrians along parts of the inner spiral, and four viewing platforms look out over the skyline and the bay. At night, pairs of coloured letters on the bridge light up to stand for the four bases of DNA. It won the World's Best Transport Building award. Gleaming steel tubes coil around the walkway in a long spiral over the water, facing Marina Bay Sands and the lotus-shaped ArtScience Museum. At night the helix glows with light. Visitors walk across, stop at the viewing platforms for photos, and many come in the evening for the lights of the bay.
